Using mobile data on a Windows 10 computer

When you're out and about, and there's no Wi-Fi available, you can connect to the internet using your phone or a mobile dongle. Doing this can use lots of data, and you'll be charged for it. A 'metered connection' limits how much data your computer uses, so that you don't end up with an expensive bill.

Using a metered connection

These steps show you how to use a metered connection.

Open the settings and choose Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.

Make sure Wi-Fi is turned On.

Open the Advanced options.

Choose Set as metered connection to turn it on.

The metered connection is set up. The computer won't be able to download updates for apps or and Windows updates, so make sure you switch it back when you're done.
