Kit Guide: Fixing a blank screen on Apple computers

If your Apple MacBook or iMac shows a blank screen when you turn it on, follow the steps below to fix the problem.

Resetting the PRAM on 2016 or newer MacBook Pro

If you have a late-2016 MacBook Pro, you won't hear the startup sound. Follow the steps if you've got one of these Macs:

1.

Start by turning your computer off. If you're not sure if it's off, press and hold the Power button for five seconds.

2.

Press the power button once to turn it back on, and hold the Command, Option(alt), P and R keys.

3.

Keep the buttons held down for 20 seconds.

4.

Let go of the keys, and leave the Mac to turn on as usual. The screen shouldn't be blank anymore.

Resetting the PRAM on other kit

If you have a MacBook from 2015 or older, or an iMac, Mac Mini or Mac Pro, follow these steps:

1.

Start by turning your computer off. If you're not sure if it's off, press and hold the Power button for five seconds.

2.

Press the power button once to turn it back on, and as soon as you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Command, Option(alt), P and R keys.

3.

Keep the buttons held down until you hear the startup sound for a second time.

4.

Let go of the keys, and leave the Mac to turn on as usual.
