What is Netflix?

Netflix is a service you pay for once a month to watch TV shows and films. On Android you can download the App from the Playstore. If you already use Netflix you can tap in the top-right corner on the word Sign In.  Enter your Netflix username and password.

If you’ve never used Netflix before then you can try a free month by pressing the join free for a month button.

  • First, you’ll need to choose a plan that’s right for you – tap on Basic, Standard or Premium then scroll down and tap continue – (don’t worry which one you choose, this can always be changed later).
  • Tap Continue.
  • This page lets you create your account – Tap Email to add your email address then Password to make up a password. Tap continue after that.
  • You’ll need to setup a way of paying.  Don’t worry, you won’t be charged for that first month – it’s for if you want to keep using it. You can choose to enter your card details or use Paypal.
  • You can now tap Start Membership. There are a few pages to let Netflix know who you are, tap continue at the bottom of each page to carry on.

Choosing a profile

When you first use the Netflix app you can see all of the profiles on your account.  Once you’ve picked one, Netflix will always open the same one. To change, you can tap on the word More in the bottom-right corner, and choose a different profile along the top of the screen.

Finding Something to Watch

You can find TV series and films in lots of different ways in the Netflix App. Part of the fun comes from looking through the suggestions Netflix has made just for you. These are put into a few categories and by scrolling up, down, left and right you can look through all of the videos. To see these, tap the word Home at the bottom left of the page.

If you want to search for a TV series or film you can do this by tapping the word Search at the bottom of the page. You can search in 3 different ways:

1.

Tap above the line at the top of the screen on Titles, people & genres to bring up your keyboard. The best way is to type in the name of the TV series of film you want to watch, but you can try an actor or genre as well.

2.

Tap the microphone in the top-right corner to use your voice to do a search. This is the same as using your keyboard, just without the typing.

3.

Tap one of the genres listed down the screen. Each of these takes you to a page with lots of categories which you can scroll up, down, left and right through to choose a video.

Controlling the Video

The basic video controls show on the screen when you tap a playing video.

Play/Pause – Tapping the two lines or the triangle in the middle of the screen will start or stop the video.

Skip forward/Backwards – On the right and left of the screen you have the number 10 with an arrow around it. This moves the video 10 seconds forward by tapping on the right, or 10 seconds back by tapping the left.

Volume – The video’s volume is controlled by your device’s volume buttons while Netflix open.

Extra Controls – You can tap Audio and Subtitles to change the language of the voice-over and add, remove or change the language of the subtitles being shown.

When you’re watching a TV show you can skip to the next episode in the series by pressing Next episode, or press Episodes to view the whole series.

Other Tricks

If you are going to be travelling then a show or film means you can watch it whenever and wherever you are.  Not all videos can be downloaded. You can see which shows can be by tapping Downloads at the bottom, then tapping Find Something to Download.  TV shows can be downloaded by episode – but if it’s a film, that’s fine, you can do that as well.

If you find a show using your phone and have a Smart TV, Chromecast or similar piece of kit, you can choose where to play the video. Your phone lets you control the video.
