With two new phones to add to their range, you might be wondering whether you need the latest iPhone. In this guide, we’ll look at the features and specifications of each phone, so you can decide whether you want to upgrade your kit.
Last year, Apple released the iPhone X for their 10th anniversary. 12 months on, and Apple is going to stop making the X in favour of the lower-priced iPhone XR. If you’ve been thinking about getting a new iPhone, we’ve had a look at the differences between the X and the XR to help you decide.
The biggest changes to the body of the XR are the aluminium frame (instead of stainless steel) and the IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen (instead of Super AMOLED). It might seem like a step back but it means that the XR is more affordable, and more importantly, they’ve been able to improve some of the internal parts while keeping the cost down.
One thing that sets it apart is the colour choices with the XR. You can get it in Black, Red, Yellow, Blue and Coral, which is a nice change from the usual Silver, Space Grey and Gold options.
The iPhone XR will come with iOS 12 as standard, and the chipset has had an upgrade from A11 to A12. The A12 still has two ‘Performance cores’, but they’re 15% more powerful than the A11, and use 40% less power. That means things will work faster while using less battery.
The ‘neural engine’ has also had an upgrade, which means that the artificial intelligence software is better at processing pictures and spoken words. It means that things like Siri, Face ID and even FaceTime calls will be smoother and easier to use.
The battery has also been improved with a boost in power, from 2718mAh in the X, to 2942mAh in the XR. This means you’ll get up to 5 hours more music playback from a single charge.
While it still has the same 12MP rear camera and 7MP selfie camera, the selfie camera has had an upgrade for shooting videos. The XR lets you shoot 1080p videos at 60fps, double the frame rate of the X - you’ll be able to make great, professional looking videos whether you’re using the rear camera or the selfie camera.
As well as the XR, Apple has two more phones to add to the range, the Xs and the Xs Max.
On the inside they’re the same, the Xs Max is just a bigger version, so let’s have a look at what makes them different to the XR.
The Xs/Xs Max has a glass front and back, with a stainless steel frame instead of aluminium. It’s comforting to know there’s a stronger material protecting the edges of your phone. It’s also got a waterproof rating of IP68, so it’ll resist up to 1m of water for up to 30 minutes. The Xs has a 5.8 inch screen, with 82.9% screen to body ratio, while the Xs Max boasts a 6.5 inch screen with 84.4% screen to body ratio, meaning there’s less space going to waste.
In the Xs/Xs Max, you get 4GB RAM, an upgrade on the 3GB in the XR helping everything run a bit faster, and more smoothly. They both come with iOS 12, and have the same chipset and Neural Engine, but the Xs Max has a 3174 mAh battery. That means you get up to 25 hours of talk time out of it.
Both phones can be charged wirelessly, and they both support fast charging too. The Xs and Xs Max both have the same camera as the XR, meaning you can get some great quality photos.
