Making a first impression is important, but when Google can make that first impression for you, it's best to keep on top of the information that's available about you. You might not think much of that old MySpace profile, but is there anything embarassing on it that a potential employer could find? This guide goes through some of the things you can do to make sure your online life isn't holding you back.

Google yourself

Most people are familiar with using Google, but did you know there's a right and wrong way to get information? Use these tips to make sure you get the most out of the results.

Log out or use private mode

When you're logged out or using incognito mode, you'll be able to get results that aren't influenced by your search history. Results are personalised when you're logged in, so the best way to see what someone else sees is to make sure you log out.

Different spellings

If you've got one of those names that people often spell wrong, try searching for the mis-spelling too. The same applies to names that can be shortened. If your name is Matthew, try searching for Matt instead. Now you'll know what people are seeing about you, no matter how they spell your name. Another way to make sure you get all the results is to put your name in quote marks ("my name"). That way, Google knows to search for this exact phrase on a page.

More than page 1

Make sure you look further than the first page of results. We recommend going through to page five of the results so that you can be sure you've covered everything, and don't miss any information that is 'buried' in later pages. We also recommend looking through image and video results, to make sure you know exactly what's out there about you.

Social media

The easiest way to protect yourself on social media is to make sure everything is private. That way, you can be sure that only the things you want people to see will be available. Privacy settings can be a bit of a minefield if you don't know what you're looking for, so we've got a guide on Facebook settings and other social media to help you.

Old social media accounts could still be lurking out there too. Where possible, you should log in and deactivate these profiles properly. That way, you don't need to worry about them anymore.

Unsubscribe/deactivate

squiggle

It's not just old social media accounts that are hanging around out there, there's plenty of other apps and services that you might have signed up to that you don't use anymore. Just because you don't use them, doesn't mean they don't still have your data. While you might not be able to go back and delete them (who can remember all that?), it's something you can be mindful of going forwards.

When you're going to delete an app, make sure you deactivate your profile or unsubscribe first. Then you won't have old account and subscriptions hanging around and filling up your inbox.

That should be everything you need to know to clean up your online life. If you need more help, you can get in touch with Team Knowhow Experts.
