Backing up data from your phone to your computer

It can be a nightmare to lose the stuff on your phone, so this is how to get everything backed up to your computer to keep it safe. There's different ways to do it for different phones, so choose the phone that you've got to get to the right section.

 

Backing up an iPhone

To back up your iPhone, you'll need iTunes to be installed and up to date on your computer. If it's just the pictures you want to get, there's some separate steps because you don't need iTunes to get them.

Transferring your pictures

Connect your iPhone to your computer, then open the 'Start menu' and choose Computer.

2.

Double-click your iPhone, then open the Internal storage folder.

3.

Open the folder called DCIM.

Right-click the folder that has your pictures in it and Copy it.

5.

Find the 'Pictures' folder in the list on the left, then right-click it and choose Paste. A folder with all the photos from your phone will be made.

Backing up your phone

Before you start, you'll need iTunes to be downloaded and installed on your computer. Once you've got it, open it up and you're ready to start.

In the top-left corner of the iTunes window, click Store.

2.

Sign in with your Apple ID and Password.

3.

Connect your phone to the computer with the USB cable. You might be asked if you trust the computer. To carry on, choose Yes.

4.

Click your iPhone in the top-right corner of iTunes to see a 'Summary' of the phone. Choose Back up now.

5.

If you're asked to transfer 'Purchases', choose Agree. This makes sure that any apps or music that you've paid for will be kept.

6.

When it's done, you'll see todays date under 'Latest backup'.

Backing up a Samsung

To back up your Samsung, you'll need to download and install Samsung KIES here. If you just want to get your pictures, videos or music from the phone, use the second set of steps.

Open the 'KIES' software and connect your phone to the computer with a USB cable.

2.

When the phone has been picked up, click the Back up/restore tab at the top.

Choose to back up everything by ticking the Select all items box. If there's anything you don't want in the list, just click it to untick it.

4.

When you've chosen what you want, clock Backup at the top. A progress bar will show you how it's getting on.

When it's done, the stuff from your phone will be saved on your computer.

Transferring your pictures

Open the 'KIES' software and connect your phone to the computer with a USB cable.

2.

You'll see a summary page of what's on the phone. From the left-hand side, choose what you want to transfer (pictures, videos or music).

 
 
 
 
3.

You'll see a list of the items you've got. Tick the box next to Title to choose everything. When you've got what you want, click save (the floppy disk icon).

4.

Choose where in your computer you want to save the items. When it's done, you can go back and do the steps again for any other things you want.

Backing up a Windows phone

These steps show you how to get your pictures, videos and music from your Windows phone.

1.

Connect the phone to your computer with a USB cable.

2.

Click the 'Start menu' and open Computer.

3.

You'll see your phone in the list. Double-click it to open it.

 
 
 
 
4.

Right-click on the folder that's got the things in it you want, then choose Copy.

5.

On the left, find where you want to put them and right-click, and choose Paste.

6.

Do the same for any other folder with things in that you want to put on your computer.

Backing up a Blackberry

This is how to back up, or get your pictures and other media, from a Blackberry. Before you start, you'll need to get the 'Blackberry Desktop Software' here.

 
 
 
 
1.

Open the 'Blackberry Desktop Software' and connect your phone to the computer with a USB cable.

2.

If it's the first time you've done it, you'll be asked to confirm your 'Computers name and your preferred music source'. Skip it by choosing Next.

3.

Sign in with your Blackberry ID and Password.

 
 
 
 
4.

Give your phone a Name, then you'll see a summary page for your Blackberry.

5.

Choose the Back up and restore tab on the left.

6.

Choose Full backup for the 'Back up type' and then click Back up device.

7.

When it's done, you'll get a confirmation message in the bottom-left corner.

Transferring your media

 
 
 
 
1.

Open the 'Blackberry Desktop Software' and connect your phone to the computer with a USB cable.

2.

In the left-hand menu, choose the file type you want (music, pictures or videos) and you'll see a list of all the ones that are on the phone.

 
 
 
 
3.

Right-click All music and go to 'Copy to' an choose Computer.

4.

Do the same for any other file types to want to copy.

Backing up an Other Android phone

If you've got another type of Android phone that's got a memory card in it, you'll be able to use these steps to get your stuff from it and save it to your computer.

Connect the phone to your computer with a USB cable.

2.

On the computer, open the 'Start menu' and choose Computer.

3.

You'll see your phone in the list. Double-click it to open it.

4.

Find the storage folder. It might be called 'Internal storage', 'Phone' or 'Memory card'. Double-click it to open it.

Right-click on the folder you want to save, then choose Copy.

In the list on the left, find where you want to save it and right-click, then choose Paste.

7.

Do the same for any other folders you want to save.
